DNA Testing

Nine puppies aleep on carpet

Puppies + DNA Testing = Results

Here at Rameslie Labradors we ensure all our dogs are DNA tested allowing us to better understand our dogs’ genetics.
The types of tests we have done help to tell us if our dogs are likely to be affected by any specific conditions.

Welfare steps

At Rameslie Labradors we take the extra step to ensure we separate our puppies from their mother for 1 to 2 hours before taking any DNA samples which helps us to avoid any cross-contamination with the DNA testing results.

Conditions we have tested for all our dogs

(CNM) Centronuclear myopathy
This DNA test looks for any sings of muscle weakness in our dogs due to a deficiency of muscle fibres.

(D-locus, d1 variant) Dilute
This DNA test looks to see if any of our dogs pigmentation genes are defected.
Affected dogs will show signs of dilute colouring in the dogs’ skin, eyes and hair colour.

(EIC) Exercise induced collapse
This DNA test looks for any signs that would show if our dogs have any nerve communication defects which affects their movability during intense exercises.
The signs include leg weakness followed by complete collapse after 5 to 20 minutes of intense exercises.

(HNPK) Hereditary nasal parakeratosis
This DNA test looks for any signs that our dogs have hereditary inflammation of the nose, which causes the dogs’ nose to become very dry and leads to irritation around the area of skin affected.

(PRA) Progressive retinal atrophy
This DNA test checks the health and vision of our dogs eyesight, so that we know if they can interpret their surroundings from light transmitted to the dogs’ retina which is then converted to an image via the dogs’ brain without any issues. In dogs that have PRA the cells at the back of the retina start to deteriorate and die, which can lead to total blindness over time.

(SD2) Skeletal dysplasia 2
This DNA test looks for any signs that are dogs are free from any genetic dwarfism defects. In dogs with SD2 their longer bones stop forming correctly, hence dwarfism characteristics.

(STGD) Stargardt disease
This DNA test looks for any signs of degenerative eye defects resulting from the progressive loss of the photoreceptor cells in the dogs’ eyes that are responsible for sensing light.

(MCD) Macular corneal dystrophy
This DNA test checks for signs that are dogs eyes are free from this inherited disease defect. Dogs that have MCD will show signs of carbohydrate building up to make the eyes appear cloudy, which can also contribute to impaired vision.
